See why stablecoins, intellectual property, and authentic gaming culture matter in defining the future Metaverse.

The Metaverse has become a buzzword, sparking diverse interpretations, theories, and predictions. From virtual worlds to blockchain games, it's a concept often seen as futuristic, yet its core essence remains elusive for many. Understanding what genuinely defines the Metaverse, beyond mere hype, could unlock opportunities and reshape digital interactions in unprecedented ways.

Gabby Dizon, co-founder of Yield Guild Games (YGG), has been shaping this very conversation. Established initially within the bustling gaming communities of the Philippines, YGG quickly evolved into a global entity known for its pioneering role in Web3 gaming.

In an exclusive interview with The Block and Beyond, Gabby shared his true thoughts on the metaverse, the expansion with Metaversity, and what's next for YGG.

Gabby's clear vision for digital economies and guild-based communities has positioned YGG as a significant player in the broader Metaverse landscape.

"Our early community started in the Philippines, and this is still where we have the majority of our community members."

While now attracting players from Latin America, Europe, and beyond, YGG continues to reflect Gabby's belief that genuine community transcends geographical boundaries.

"In Web3, people have more in common than they are different. They want to play games, apply their skills, and get paid in crypto."

Views on the Metaverse and Education with Metaversity

Gabby’s perspective on the Metaverse diverges notably from mainstream interpretations. While many envision it as a singular, immersive 3D world, Gabby offers a more grounded vision.

"I've never viewed the Metaverse as one 3D world that everyone enters... It means that everyone is online, having their own persona, identity, currency, or social circles."

To Gabby, the Metaverse encompasses diverse digital spaces like games, social platforms, and community groups, each an authentic extension of users' digital lives. This nuanced understanding positions YGG uniquely, enabling it to develop targeted experiences that resonate deeply with global communities.

One of YGG's significant expansions beyond traditional gaming is its educational initiative, Metaversity. Rather than seeing this as a shift away from gaming, Gabby regards it as a natural progression in community building.

"We've always needed to train our community members... Metaversity was very natural for us to get into, equipping people with essential Web3 skills."

Metaversity addresses a critical need by training individuals in practical Web3 skills to enhance their ability to succeed and earn sustainably in digital economies. This educational expansion aligns perfectly with YGG’s original mission of community empowerment.

The Power of Intellectual Property

Intellectual property (IP) represents another critical pillar in Gabby’s Web3 strategy, exemplified by his admiration for successful ventures like Pudgy Penguins. This brand’s ability to cross over into mainstream retail spaces underscores IP's powerful role in Web3 growth.

"They're one of the best IPs in Web3. They found an appealing IP that can extend well beyond Web3 into Web2. They were able to get into Walmart, Target, and most retail stores."

For Gabby, successful IP development hinges on broad appeal, allowing seamless transitions between traditional markets and blockchain ecosystems.

Looking ahead, Gabby anticipates significant developments at the intersection of Web2 and Web3 gaming. He particularly emphasizes stablecoins as a transformative technology.

"Even non-Web3 games might start accepting stablecoins. Stablecoin as payment rails will be one of the biggest stories in crypto."

This approach could democratize crypto integration, simplifying transactions and encouraging broader adoption. Furthermore, Gabby envisions speculative games increasingly leveraging blockchain’s strengths in asset trading and ownership.

YGG’s Exciting Next Step: LOL Land

Despite his role as a leading figure in Web3, Gabby remains authentically connected to his gaming roots. His personal passion for gaming continues to influence and inform his decisions.

"Right now, I'm playing Claire Obscur Expedition 33. I think it's a wonderful game. I'm actually a big fan of single-player RPGs. I played Baldur's Gate as well, and then Path of Exile."

And reflecting his roots, YGG's immediate future involves its much anticipated self-developed game, "LOL Land," set to officially launch this May 23, 2025 on Abstract Chain.

"We've been working with other games through our guild advancement program for years, so we're very excited to finally launch our own game."

Launching "LOL Land" marks a significant milestone for YGG, reflecting the platform’s growth from a supportive facilitator to an innovative game developer.

Gabby Dizon’s journey through gaming, blockchain innovation, and guild development has shaped a unique vision of the Metaverse. His insights provide valuable lessons for Web3 builders, highlighting that meaningful digital experiences arise from genuine community engagement, strategic innovation, and a grounded understanding of what truly connects people in digital spaces.
